When a tree should come down
Not every problem tree needs to go. Trimming fixes a lot. But removal is usually the right call when:
- It's dead or mostly dead. That includes ash trees killed by emerald ash borer, which has been in Onondaga County since 2013. Dead ash turns brittle quickly.
- It's leaning toward something you care about, especially if the lean is new or the soil on the far side is lifting or cracked.
- The trunk is damaged: deep cracks, large hollow spots, or mushrooms and fungus growing at the base.
- It's too close to the house and would need so much trimming that what's left wouldn't be healthy.
- It's crowding better trees or blocking light you want for a garden or lawn.
How a removal works
In an open yard, a tree can often be felled in one piece in a planned direction. It's the fastest and cheapest kind of removal.
Near the house, garage, fence or wires, the tree is taken down in sections. A climber or bucket lift cuts the tree piece by piece, and heavy pieces are lowered on ropes so nothing drops onto the roof or lawn. It takes longer, which is why these removals cost more.
Cleanup: branches go through a chipper, and the trunk is cut into rounds. You can keep the wood for firewood or have it hauled away. The stump is cut close to the ground. Grinding it out is a separate step; see stump grinding.
The Town won't haul it away for you
Residents are often surprised by this one. The Town of Manlius brush district only picks up branches up to 5 feet long and 3 inches in diameter, and stumps are never collected. Anything larger is picked up by the hauler for a fee. Contractor brush isn't allowed at the Highway Department drop-off, and the Village of Manlius asks contractors to remove their own debris.
So when you compare estimates, check whether chipping and haul-away are included. A cheaper quote that leaves a pile of logs in the yard isn't a bargain. Full details are in our town and village tree & brush guide.
What it costs
Most single-tree removals in the Syracuse area cost between about $420 and $1,840, with an average around $860, according to This Old House's local cost data. Big trees over a house, dead trees that can't be climbed safely and tight backyards cost more. See the full cost guide.
Before you hire anyone
- Make sure it's your tree. Trees in the road right-of-way belong to the Town or village. In the Village of Fayetteville, residents aren't allowed to remove or prune street trees.
- Ask for proof of insurance. Tree work is dangerous, and you don't want an injury or a damaged roof to land on your homeowner's policy.
- Stay away from power lines. If a tree or limb is touching the lines along the street, call your utility. That's their job.
