Trees in the village
The Village of Cazenovia has a Tree Commission, set up to preserve, protect and enhance the village's trees. If a tree sits along the street in the village right-of-way, check with the village before anyone cuts it. Call the village office at 315-655-3041 or the village highway garage at 315-655-3068.
Outside the village: bigger lots, bigger jobs
Most of the Town of Cazenovia is rural, and the tree work tends to be bigger: hazard trees along long driveways and fence lines, storm damage on the edge of a woodlot, or clearing ground for a garden, barn or building site. For that kind of work, see land clearing. If you have a big old tree with a split you'd rather not lose, see cabling and bracing.
Can you burn the brush?
Sometimes. DEC rules allow residential brush burning in towns with fewer than 20,000 people, and the Town of Cazenovia qualifies, but never from March 16 through May 14, when burning is banned statewide. Local rules can be stricter, especially in the village. Chipping is usually faster, and the chips make good mulch.
Ash trees
As of 2026, state officials report emerald ash borer in every New York county except Hamilton and Lewis, so Madison County ash trees are at risk too. If you have ash on your property, decide now whether to treat it or take it down, before it dies and turns brittle.
